Because if your lashes are awesome then LIFE is ace

So here’s the deal.

If your lashes are long and sexy, then you’re gorgeous 24-7. End of story.

You can get away without wearing a scrap of makeup and still look utterly amazing. Staggering but true.

So the obvious question to ask here is how do we get those crazy, awesome lashes into our lives and ASAP? We needed to know and fast so we went to the source of all things lashes – yep, we’re talking Dr Paola Dal Corno, over at Switzerland R&D (that’s research and development if you weren’t already across that) headquarters for the beauty brand Mavala.

This terribly clever woman knows lashes inside and out.

So we hit her with the serious questions. And this is what she had to say.

Lashes, lashes, lashes – courtesy of the clever Amy Jean Linnehan. Oh, brows too. Girl can do it all.

The basics … what are lashes made of?

Eyelashes are just like other hair on our body and are made of 10% water and 90% keratin proteins with some essential lipids to cement the constituent particles together and pigments.
The hair follicle (located beneath the skin) is the active (living) structure of the hair, while the shaft (hard filamentous part that extends above the skin surface) is dead.

A cross section of the hair shaft may be divided into three zones:

• Cuticle is the outer layer, which is made up of overlapping transparent keratin cells. It works like protective scales.

• Cortex is the primary source of mechanical strength and is where moisture and natural pigment (called “melanin”) are held. Melanin contained in cortex determines the natural colour of your hair.

• Medulla is the core of hair shaft, is not always present and is an open, unstructured region.

How long is the lash cycle we hear so much about?

The lifetime of a lash varies from 45 to 90 days, depending on the physiology of each one’s age, lifestyle habits, make-up and removal habits, possible therapeutic care … The lash life cycle starts with a growth phase between 30 and 45 days, followed by a phase of life, rest and ageing, to end with the unavoidable lash loss.

Around 150 to 200 lashes – of an average length of 8 to 12 mm – form the upper lashes against 100 to 150 lashes – of an average length of 6 to 8 mm – for the lower lashes.

Of course, you can always opt for a rocking mascara … Try L’Oreal Paris Mega Volume Miss Baby Roll Mascara, $21.95.

Everyday, new ones grow…

Well interestingly, each individual eyelash has a mini life cycle of its own, so they are in a constant state of renewal depending on where they are in the cycle. Everyday we lose some, everyday we grow some!

How hard is it to lengthen our lashes if we’re not genetically blessed in that fashion?

It’s a process that takes time and dedication, much like investing in skin and nail health. Targeted growth products can be applied to natural lashes and there are also synthetic options available to add volume to the lashes.

Lash extensions are very popular but they can be costly and time-consuming. Can anything else give the effect?

There are definitely alternative options out there that are gentler on the lashes. You could start by diligently applying a conditioning, nutritive serum (she recommends her own brand’s Mavala’s DOUBLE-LASH, $26.95,) which offer a solution to short, weak and brittle eyelashes.

Finally … What is so special about long lashes?

Long lashes are essential to enhance the beauty of the eyes. They frame the eye and provide a canvas upon which to work with.

Ever since the 1960’s and style icons like Elisabeth Taylor and Sophia Lauren, lashes have been the cornerstone of a sophisticated eye makeup look. They also serve a functional purpose in that they protect the eye cornea from drying out and during blinking, which the eyes does on average 30, 000 times a day.

So there you have it. Lashes ladies. Long, super sexy, sultry lashes and everything you ever wanted to know about them.

Now get out there and flutter those babies. This is your world. Own it!
